Helping George Feel Confident and Sociable Again.
After my husband George had a minor stroke, his mobility was reduced, and I could no longer safely help him with bathing, dressing, and moving around our home. Admitting that was hard. We chose The Hill House because it offered hands-on assistance in a setting that felt more like a home than a large community.
Our main concern was whether a six-resident home might be too quiet for George, who has always been sociable. During the move, staff carefully reviewed his medication, mobility, and dietary needs. I was invited to stay for lunch, which made that first afternoon feel much less abrupt for both of us.
Over the past seven months, the resident manager, personal-care staff, medication team, and dining staff have come to understand George as a person. When they learned how much he loves golf, they began walking with him to the putting green whenever he felt able. On quieter days, a caregiver will sit with him and talk about old tournaments. That kind of companionship has helped him feel more like himself.
He receives reliable help with personal care and getting to meals. If his appetite or behavior changes, I’m told, and I feel comfortable raising smaller concerns before they become bigger ones. He enjoys the meals, snacks, movies, and outdoor areas. Being able to dine with him is especially meaningful to me.
One meal substitution was served without an explanation. Staff prepared an alternative and recorded his preferences for the future.
George is more confident, socializes more, and no longer worries about falling while managing alone. I’d suggest visiting during a meal and speaking with the regular caregivers because, in a small home, those relationships make a real difference.

A Smaller Home Where Mom’s Preferences Still Matter.
Choosing a place for my 83-year-old mother, Barbara, involved more emotion than I expected.
